Treaty Negotiations

In 2009, recognizing the current impacts and continuing threats of ongoing mercury contamination, governments of the world agreed to start negotiations on a global, legally binding mercury treaty with the goal of finishing by 2013.

The first session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to prepare the treaty on mercury (INC1) took place 7-11 June, 2010 in Sweden.

Numerous representatives from IPEN Participating Organizations took part in the INC1.

The second session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to prepare the treaty on mercury (INC2) took place 24-28 January, 2011 in Japan.
