Artisan mining at the Masara gold mining site in Kenya conforms to neither mining laws nor regulations governing mining operations and environmental management. iLima identified this site as a hotspot and sampled human hair to test for levels of heavy metals. Laboratory analysis of groundwater and sediments in the area reveal high levels of lead and mercury. iLima also collected and sent hair samples to an accredited laboratory for mercury analysis.
