Mercury-Free Campaign in Schools

For this project, Pesticide Action Network- Mauritius (PANeM) aimed to raise awareness about mercury use in schools. To that end, PANeM published and distributed booklets on Mercury-Free Schools, and carried out lectures with questions and answers sessions during half-day workshops for higher secondary school students. About nine hundred students attended the workshops.

Additionally, PANeM carried out inventories of the laboratories in selected schools, and surprised teachers by informing them about how many products containing mercury (excluding the metal itself) they were dealing with everyday. Upon learning this, school management agreed, in principle, to change to mercury-free alternatives at the soonest possible opportunity.
