Cameroon Has Already Banned Lead Paints

In Cameroon, plastic bottles, plastic bags, old rubber tyres, end of lives energy saving bulbs, and glass thermometers are frequently and carelessly dumped either on unused land or in water ways, with the risk of transportation to other waterbodies such as lakes or rivers. To eliminate this visual pollution, people living near these spontaneous dumping sites often turn to open burning of waste, with consequences for both ecosystems and human health.

Yaoundé, 18 January 2018 – An international study found extensive lead contamination around lead battery recycling plants in Cameroon and six additional African countries.  The contamination levels in soil ranged up to 14% lead with average concentrations of 2% lead.

This report (anglais et français), conducted by Centre de Recherche et d’Education pour le Développement (CREPD) in partnership with IPEN, presents new data on the total lead content of solvent-based paints for home use available on the market in Cameroon. It also presents background information on why the use of lead paint is a source of serious concern, especially to children’s health; a review of national policy frameworks that are in place to ban or restrict the manufacture, import, export, distribution, sale and use of lead paint, and provides a strong justification to adopt and enforce further regulatory controls in Cameroon. Finally, it proposes action steps by different stakeholders to protect children and others from lead paint.

In December, IPEN held an African Sub-Regional Meeting in order to foster relationships among IPEN Participating Organizations (POs) in the region; learn from each other by sharing skills, experiences, and best practices; expand knowledge about international chemical policy developments; and update POs in the region on the IPEN 2020 goals.

Investigating Management of Mercury and its Wastes in Artisanal Gold Mining in the Benue National Park in the Republic of Cameroon

The mercury hotspot and mercury waste study in the artisanal gold mining location in the Benue National Park in Cameroon, conducted by the NGO COPRESSA, has identified that primary mercury mining in the form of cinnabar and mercuric chloride takes place at the mining camps in the study area. However, elemental mercury is not often used for amalgamation at the mining camps, but trading in elemental mercury is conducted by gold traders in the larger towns nearby.

On November 25th, Centre de Recherche et d’Education pour le Développement / Research and Education Centre for Development (CREPD), IPEN’s Regional Hub for Francophone Africa, held a stakeholders workshop in Yaoundé, Cameroon and publicly released their new paint analyses results. The paints had been tested for levels of lead content. Representatives from industry, government ministries, pediatricians, academia from the faculty of medicine, UNIDO (the United Nations Industrial Development Organization), NGOs, and the media attended the workshop.
