As an international tourist destination, Phuket currently attracts around two million visitors each year who contribute nearly 120 tons of solid waste each day. The Thai government, in violation of several environmental laws, operates a massive waste incinerator to treat this waste. No alternative or recycling system has ever been discussed.
A Study of Mercury Contamination in Face Whitening Products in Thailand
To examine the level of mercury contamination in face whitening products on the Thai market and to increase awareness among consumers about the danger of mercury and the importance of eliminating mercury from products, Ecological Alert and Recovery Thailand (EARTH) conducted sampling and an awareness-raising campaign. Results of the sampling confirmed that 20% of all face whitening products studied were contaminated with mercury, although limitations in the testing process indicate this could be higher.
Survey and Policy Advocacy on the Management of Used Cell Phone Batteries
Responding to the lack of regulation on E-waste in Thailand, Ecological Alert and Recovery, Thailand (EARTH) researched the the amount of used cell phone batteries in Thailand and how they have been managed by surveying and interviewing cell phone sellers in selected markets (as well as mobile phone distributors, battery distributors, network service providers, and companies specializing in recycling). Following this, EARTH compiled a report outlining their findings, which was used to raise awareness about the problem among national and local authorities as well as general consumers.
