Country Profile of Highly Hazardous Pesticides in Azerbaijan

This country profile presents data for over 1700 pesticides registers for use in Azerbaijan at the beginning of 2020. The data show that about one third of approved pesticides are highly hazardous pesticides. Additionally, some banned pesticides still in use in Azerbaijan. In 2020, a national campaign supporting phasing out of HHPs in Azerbaijan was launched. An addendum to the list of HHPs in Azerbaijan was prepared and approved for step-by-step phase out.

The Report provides data on the state of organic agriculture in the Republic of Azerbaijan and recommendations for the development of an integrated plant protection system. Among its findings, the report states that to improve the agro-ecology approach in agriculture in Azerbaijan it is necessary to prepare and adopt relevant legislative and regulatory acts; to develop and introduce a regulatory mechanism aimed at increasing the efficiency of environmental activities of the farmers based on "polluter pays" principle; to promote scientific innovations, energy and resource saving technologies, waste-free and environmentally safe technological processes in agricultural production; to include measures in regional environmental programs and socio-economic development programs aimed at supporting and developing organic agriculture; agricultural landowners and land users should carry out measures to protect and enhance soil fertility and other environmental activities.
