Stakeholder Workshop on POPs in Nigeria

Report and stakeholders reflection workshop on the Nigerian POPs situation.

FOTE, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment, Lagos Zonal Office, organized a one-day National Workshop on March 9, 2006, on the theme "Stakeholders' Reflection on the Nigerian POPs Situation." The workshop was also attended by distinguished representatives, including Director of Pollution Control of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Comptroller of Environment, Federal Ministry of Environment and Head Lagos Zonal Office, Coordinator Diploma II Programme, Faculty of Education, University of Lagos, NES and UNIDO National Expert on POPs. The workshop came out with several resolutions including: increasing the speed of implementing the Convention; identifying alternatives to POPs; increased border security to prevent illegal traffic of POPs and other chemicals; more coordinated networking among stakeholders; carrying out a public awareness-raising campaign that includes local languages and rural areas; and effective coordination of all stakeholders to develop a national plan to reduce and eliminate POPs.
