GFC and SAICM: IPEN Materials

Prior to the Global Framework on Chemicals (GFC), the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) provided a platform for international cooperation on chemical safety. IPEN contributed to the development and implementation of hundreds of SAICM-related projects and continues to work on protecting health and the environment through the GFC.

SAICM oversaw meetings of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM) and between ICCM sessions also held meetings of its Open Ended Working Group (OEWG) and Intersessional Process (IP) meetings. Below are IPEN documents from its work at SAICM events. Also, see IPEN members’ work through the International SAICM Implementation Project (2010-2012).

SAICM Common Statement (2007)

At the outset of the SAICM process, IPEN and a group of public interest partners launched a SAICM Outreach Campaign to encourage environmental, public health, labor, women’s rights, and other groups to work collaboratively on projects to advance SAICM goals. Groups were urged to sign a civil society Common Statement to help connect and strengthen cross-sectoral and regional collaborations. Ultimately more than 1,000 groups from 100+ countries signed on.
