Global week of action on POPs in the Philippines.
The Ecological Waste Coalition of the Philippines and its partner groups commemorated a Global Week of Action on POPs on the eve of the first Conference of Parties (COP1) of the Stockholm Convention. Various activities were undertaken to push the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to turn away from processes that yield by-product POPs, and to inform and generate support from various stakeholders on non-incineration processes for managing municipal discards and health care wastes. Participating groups met government officials; organized a creative protest action; spread information using the radio, TV, Internet and newspapers; sponsored a public forum; and conducted a cleanup drive to build awareness and action on POPs and related concerns.
