IPEN POs from the region are very resilient despite hardships from war and political instability. Implementing IPEN projects helps POs build relationships with national authorities, and IPEN’s capacity building and training bring tools they use to address threats from many different pollutants.
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region features diverse landscapes, from deserts to Mediterranean coasts and major rivers like the Nile and Tigris-Euphrates. Culturally, it is a mosaic of Arab, Berber, Kurdish, and Persian groups, with Islam as the dominant religion alongside significant numbers of other religions. In many cases, IPEN POs bring issues around toxic chemical threats to the forefront for the first time, often producing the only data on toxic pollution from their countries, to inform global and national policies.
