ISLAMABAD: In view of its hazardous effects on human health and environment, the federal government has restricted the use of mercury dental amalgam for children below 15 and pregnant women.
15 August 2018, Quezon City. An ordinance that will protect consumers, especially women and girls, against skin lightening products contaminated with mercury has successfully hurdled the hearing by the Quezon City Council’s Committee on Health and Sanitation.
At the committee hearing held yesterday, August 14, the committee unanimously approved Proposed Ordinance 20CC-439 entitled “An Ordinance Banning the Manufacture, Distribution, and Sale of Mercury-Containing Skin Whitening Cosmetics in Quezon City.
The said ordinance was co-introduced by Councilors Elizabeth Delartmente, Diorella Maria Sotto-Antonio, Irene Belmonte, Kate Abigael Galang- Coseteng, Eufemio Lagumbay, Eric Medina and Marivic Co-Pilar.
Stakeholders including top government officials, academicians, civil society, Nigeria Dental Association, dentists in private practice, institutions, media, development partners and other relevant bodies will converge in Abuja, the nation capital city on Tuesday July 17, 2018 to develop a National Policy on the phase down of dental amalgam use in Nigeria.

ISLAMABAD: The provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has immediately restricted the use of mercury dental fillings for children below 15 throughout the province to protect them from catching serious diseases.
Strong indication that Côte d’Ivoire will soon join the committee of nations that had ratified the Minamata Convention on Mercury, the global Convention that seeks to prevent human and physical environment from mercury pollution has emerged as the country is already finalising its papers towards submission to the Convention secretariat.
