Mapping toxics in surrounding of Phuket as a contribution to global debate about POPs in wastes

As an international tourist destination, Phuket currently attracts around two million visitors each year who contribute nearly 120 tons of solid waste each day. The Thai government, in violation of several environmental laws, operates a massive waste incinerator to treat this waste. No alternative or recycling system has ever been discussed.

Situational Analysis of Morogoro Hotspot Area in Tanzania for Persistent Organic Pollutants

A situational analysis of POPs in the Morogoro Hotspot Area was conducted by Tanzania Association of Public Occupational and Environmental Health Experts (TAPOHE) in 2011. Participatory survey methods including desk review, in-depth interviews with key informants, focused group discussions and participants’ observations were used to collect data. Additionally, soil and biota samples (plants) were collected for pesticide chemical analysis. Findings from the situational analysis confirmed that Morogoro is one of the most DDT (and other obsolete pesticides)- contaminated sites in the country.

Facilitate the promotion of non-combustion technologies of obsolete pesticide phase-out in Russia

Volgograd-Ecopress hosted a workshop on the use of non-combustion technologies for the elimination of obsolete pesticide stockpiles responsible for widespread environmental and human health impacts in Russia. With the participation of local authorities, academia, NGOs, and managers of industrial facilities, modern waste management technologies were presented and regional plans of action were discussed. A special case study of a successful pesticide elimination project using a non-combustion technology of biodegradation based on bioglauconite use was presented.

Identification of pesticide hotspots in Sirdarinsky region, Uzbekistan

The districts located in the Syrdaryinskaya oblast contain numerous obsolete pesticide burial sites. Although officials maintain the safety of these burial sites, ARMON's independent assessment showed that these sites are leaking pesticides into the air and ground water, are not properly safeguarded against the theft of pesticides, and appear to be a major cause of adverse health impacts in the surrounding communities. In addition, ARMON identified several burial sites not accounted for by official government records, also leaking pesticides.

Waste Incineration Residues, a Significant Source of POPs in the Czech Republic

In an effort to create public awareness about illegal waste incineration in the Czech Republic as well as the larger issue of waste incineration residues in general, Arnika conducted several activities. The first involved sampling for PCB, dioxins, and PAH residues at a waste site and making the results public through mass media. Subsequently, a workshop on POPs wastes and waste incineration was organized for Czech NGOs, with 22 participants. A joint declaration from the workshop was created, as well as the formation of a new network.
