Plastics Treaty Negotiators Meet in Busan in Hopes of Reaching Compromise

Negotiators from around the globe are descending on Busan, South Korea, this week for a final scheduled meeting aimed at crafting a global treaty to curb plastics pollution. They have a long way to go.
Unresolved questions range from whether the final treaty should cover plastics production to the extent to which it should rely on voluntary national action…. (E)ven deciding on procedural measure(s) may prove difficult, said Bjorn Beeler, executive director of the International Pollutants Elimination Network, a global network of advocacy groups that works on pollution issues.
“How do you even begin Busan? It’ll be a big fight,” he said.
