African Lead Paint Elimination Project Launched

IPEN launched its African Lead Paint Elimination Campaign with an Inception Meeting held in Dar es Salam, Tanzania in late November. The project involves four African countries – Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast and Tanzania – and is being implemented in partnership with the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which provided $1 million in funding.

IPEN Participating Organizations engaged in the project are: AGENDA for Environment and Responsible Development (AGENDA) (Tanzania); Centre de Recherche et d’Education pour le Developpment (CREPD): Pesticide Action Nexus (PAN) Ethiopia (Ethiopia); and Jeunes Volontaires pour l’Environnement (JVE) (Ivory Coast).

The goal of the project is to eliminate lead in paint in the four counties. To achieve that goal, partners will raise widespread awareness among business entrepreneurs, consumers and policy makers about the adverse human health impacts of lead-based decorative paints, particularly on the health of children under six years old. They will analyze the lead content of paints easily available on the national market and publicize the results, and they will pursue national regulation of lead in paint.
