Chlorpyrifos is a chlorinated organophosphate insecticide with the characteristics of a persistent organic pollutant (POP). It is toxic at very low concentrations and can be transported over long distances; it is persistent and bioaccumulative, concentrating in the tissues of aquatic and terrestrial organisms at successive levels of the trophic food chain.

Los plásticos contienen unas 10 mil sustancias químicas, de las cuales la mitad son aditivos y muchos son tóxicos, por lo que son dañinos para la salud y el ambiente. Ante ello, se debe reducir su producción y generar políticas públicas para frenar la crisis plástica creciente, aunque en el país aún se les promociona y sólo se tiene la visión del negocio, señalaron las organizaciones Fronteras Comunes, Asociación Ecológica Santo Tomás y la Red Internacional de Eliminación de Contaminantes.

COVID-19 and Chemical Usage in Jamaica

This project, carried out by Caribbean Poison Information Network (CARPIN), sought to propel the government to review the current standards for household chemicals and develop a chemical policy. CARPIN studied current chemicals-related regulations in Jamaica, which chemicals are not regulated, and which relevant international conventions / frameworks Jamaica is a Party to. CARPIN also launched a survey to determine which chemicals were being used during the pandemic.

At the conclusion of the project, CARPIN prepared the following recommendations:

Webinar on Aerial Spraying of Pesticides in Latin America

Texcoco, México Around the world, pesticides sprayed from planes come with harmful side effects. The aerial drift falls on nearby fields, and impacts nearby communities.

In early November 2021, IPEN's regional hub in Latin America and the Caribbean hosted a webinar on the subject, featuring speakers from Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and the European Union discussing their fights to prohibit or restrict aerial spraying.

Highly Hazardous Pesticides in Jamaica

The Caribbean Poison Information Network (CARPIN) reveals in this telling report on Highly Hazardous Pesticides in Jamaica that HHPs account for 32% of the registered active ingredients in the country. Other countries have banned 66 pesticide active ingredients registered in Jamaica, including three pesticides not approved in the European Union.

Prohibition of single-use plastics and Roll Back of Morelos Waste Law

In January 2020, a ban on single-use plastics came into force in the territory of Morelos, Mexico, leaving 90 days for the development of the regulations of the Morelos Waste Law.
